Short, direct answers. If yours isn't here, ask our scoping assistant or write to [email protected].
Farmer1st is the first-mile infrastructure built around farmers: a farmer-controlled network where companies, governments and organisations collect, verify and share origin data — and build the services they need on top of it. This page answers the most common questions about EUDR, geolocation, farmer data, the pre-competitive network, surveys, the Nursery and getting started.

Frequently asked questions
What is Farmer1st?
Farmer1st is the first-mile infrastructure built around farmers: a farmer-controlled network where companies, governments and organisations collect, verify and share origin data — and build the services they need on top of it. Services such as EUDR compliance, geolocation, field agent management, surveys and training are modules you switch on.
Who is Farmer1st for?
Food and agri companies and traders, governments and national programmes, NGOs, donors, banks and researchers, and investors. Each uses the same network for different questions. See who it's for.
Which commodities does Farmer1st support?
Cocoa, coffee, rubber, palm oil, cashew, spices and cotton, and other smallholder crops on request. The same modules adapt to the risks, rules and farmers of each supply chain. See commodities.
How does Farmer1st help with EUDR compliance?
Farmer1st produces due diligence reports (DDR) and due diligence statements (DDS) from plot-level data — farmer identity, plot geolocation and deforestation assessment — and integrates directly with EU TRACES for submission. See EUDR compliance and the EUDR guide.
What is a TRACES-ready DDS?
It is a due diligence statement whose geolocation and product data are prepared in the format the EU Information System (EU TRACES) accepts, so it can be submitted without re-keying. Farmer1st validates polygons and data before submission to avoid rejections. See the glossary.
How do you check a plot for deforestation?
Each polygon is validated, then assessed for deforestation with a multi-source method up to today — not frozen at a single year. The result is a plot-level risk signal with the evidence behind it. See geo & polygons.
Can we use our own deforestation calculation method?
Yes. Your calculation method, not ours imposed. We have our own method, we can apply public reference methods such as Whisp from FAO, and we build the model that follows your risk policy — thresholds, sources and treatment rules.
What if our existing polygons fail validation?
We import them from any source, flag geometry errors, overlaps and implausible shapes, and correct them with AI assistance or send field agents back to re-map only the plots that need it.
Who owns the data?
Farmers control data about themselves and their plots. Organisations use it under recorded consent, for stated purposes, and keep their own commercial data private. See trust and farmer data.
How does farmer consent work?
Consent is recorded per use — who asked, when and for what. Farmers can see who uses their data and can revoke consent for future uses. Records that a law requires to be kept are retained as that law requires.
What is the pre-competitive network?
It is how Farmer1st lets buyers work together when they choose to. Everything a buyer brings, including its farmer registry, plot polygons, prices, volumes and supplier relationships, stays private by default. When buyers agree, they can pool what none of them should pay for twice, such as fraud detection across buyers, agronomic knowledge, farmer access for surveys or common farmer records, on terms they set together. See pre-competitive network.
Can competitors see our suppliers or prices?
No. Commercial data, prices, volumes and supplier relationships are never visible to other buyers. Cross-buyer checks such as fraud detection return a signal about your own supply, not another buyer's data.
How do farmer surveys work?
You define the population — country, region, gender, age, commodity — and the questions. Registered farmers answer through field agents or the farmer app, with consent recorded, and farmers are fairly compensated for their contribution. See farmer surveys and impact.
Does Farmer1st replace our current tools?
No. Farmer1st plugs into the field tools, ERPs and compliance platforms you already use and fills the first-mile gap between them. Existing data is imported and mapped with AI assistance. See data integration.
Does it work offline?
Yes. The field apps are offline-first, designed for weak networks, and synchronise when a connection is available. AI is added to support farmers and the teams who use the tools.
What is the Nursery?
The Nursery is how we build what the platform doesn't offer yet: explore your need, prototype it on existing modules plus the missing piece, and deploy it. The prototype is promoted to product, never rewritten. See the Nursery.
Can Farmer1st build a custom service for us?
Yes. That is what the Nursery is for. Because most of the service reuses existing modules, custom work focuses on what is specific to you and iterates at low cost until it fits.
Which languages are supported?
The website and scoping assistant are available in English, French, Portuguese, Spanish and Indonesian. Field apps and user guides are delivered in the languages of the people who use them.
How is data secured?
Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, access follows least privilege, every access is logged in an audit trail, and data can be hosted in its country of origin. We share security details with your teams during scoping.
Can a government host national data in-country?
Yes. Data can be hosted in the country it comes from, and Farmer1st integrates with national registries and traceability systems rather than competing with them. See governments & national programmes.
How is Farmer1st priced?
Pricing is modular and on demand: you pay for the modules you switch on and for what the Nursery builds for you. What buyers choose to pool is paid for once, which lowers the cost for each of them. We discuss pricing once we understand your need.
How do we get started?
Describe your need to our scoping assistant in about 10 minutes. We come back with a first sketch of your service. No obligation.
