Field agent

Updated · 2026-09-28
Definition

A field agent is a person employed or contracted by a cooperative, company, programme or government to work directly with farmers: registering them, mapping plots, collecting survey and transaction data, delivering training and verifying information. Field agents are the main source of first-mile data.

Also known as: field officer · extension agent · enumerator · lead farmer · community facilitator

Why does it matter?

Most first-mile evidence passes through a field agent’s hands: farmer identities, polygons, survey answers, CLMRS visits, training attendance. Their training, workload, tools and incentives determine data quality more than any downstream check.

How does field agent management work?

  • Planning: assigning farmers, villages and tasks to agents, with realistic workloads.
  • Tools: offline-first apps with validation, maps and guidance.
  • Training: protocols for mapping, sensitive interviews and consent.
  • Supervision: tracking completion, quality indicators and anomalies.
  • Verification: back-checks, photos, GPS traces and re-visits on a sample.
  • Feedback: showing agents their quality scores and errors.

Common pitfalls

  • Paying per record, which rewards speed over accuracy and can encourage fabricated data.
  • Assigning too many farmers to each agent.
  • Training once at launch, with no refresher as protocols change.
  • Using the same agents for sensitive topics without specific training and safeguards.

Frequently asked questions

How can companies ensure field data is reliable?

Common practices include clear protocols, training and certification of agents, in-app validation, GPS and time stamps, back-checks on a sample of records, and dashboards that reveal outliers such as implausibly fast surveys.

Are field agents the same as extension officers?

They overlap. Extension officers focus on agronomic advice, often in public services. Field agents in supply chains combine data collection, compliance tasks and sometimes advice.
