Farmer app: offline, local languages, voice, payments and consent controls
Offline, in local languages, with voice: a direct channel to farmers, where they control their data and receive payments.
The Farmer1st farmer app puts farmers in direct contact with the organisations they work with. It works offline, in local languages, with voice and read-aloud for low literacy. Farmers see and control their data and consent, receive payments by mobile money, take part in surveys and training, and get agronomic advice.
Farmer app & engagement
Offline-first
Works without a network and syncs when a connection returns, on the phones farmers actually own.
Voice and read-aloud
Content can be listened to as well as read, so farmers with low literacy can use every feature.
Local languages
The interface, training and questions are available in the languages farmers speak.
Payments to farmers
Farmers can receive payments by mobile money, with a clear record of what was paid and why.
Consent controls
Farmers see what data exists about them, who it is shared with and for what, and can change their choices.
A direct channel
Surveys, training, quizzes, advice and messages reach farmers without passing through several intermediaries.
How it works
- 01
Onboard
Farmers join through a field agent or directly, and their identity is verified against the registry.
- 02
Consent
Each farmer chooses what to share, with whom and for what, and can review those choices at any time.
- 03
Engage
Farmers receive training, surveys, advice and messages, and confirm or correct their own data.
- 04
Get paid
Payments reach farmers by mobile money, recorded against the transaction they relate to.
What you get
- A direct, trusted channel to farmers
- Consent recorded, not assumed
- Farmers who confirm and correct their own data
- Payments that are faster and traceable
Why does a first-mile network need a farmer app?
Most first-mile systems are built for the people who collect data about farmers, not for farmers themselves. Information flows one way: from the farm to the buyer. Farmers rarely see what is recorded about them, and they are asked the same questions by every programme.
Farmer1st is the first-mile infrastructure built around farmers: a farmer-controlled network where companies, governments and organisations collect, verify and share origin data, and build the services they need on top of it. The farmer app is where farmers exercise that control, and where organisations reach them directly.
What can farmers do in the app?
- See and correct their data: profile, plots, deliveries and certifications.
- Manage consent: choose what is shared, with whom and for what, and change it later.
- Receive payments by mobile money, with a record of what each payment relates to.
- Learn: follow training and quizzes on good agricultural practices.
- Answer surveys from organisations they choose to hear from, through farmer surveys.
- Ask for advice from the AI agronomist in their own language.
- Raise a concern through an independent grievance mechanism.
How is it built for real field conditions?
The app is designed around the conditions farmers actually face:
| Condition | How the app handles it |
|---|---|
| No or weak network | Offline-first; data syncs when a connection returns |
| Low literacy | Voice, read-aloud and meaningful icons throughout |
| Many languages | Interface and content in local languages |
| Shared or basic phones | Light on storage and data, secure per farmer |
| No smartphone at all | Field agents act on the farmer’s behalf, with consent |
The platform is offline-first in the field, with AI added to support farmers and the teams who use the tools.
How does consent work?
Consent is recorded, not assumed. When an organisation wants access to a farmer’s data, or wants to include them in a survey, the farmer sees who is asking and for what. They accept or decline, and can withdraw later. Every choice is recorded with a date.
For farmers, this is control over their own information. For organisations, it is risk reduction: a clear legal basis for using the data, a traceable provenance, and better quality, since farmers who trust the system give better answers.
How do payments to farmers work?
Payments can reach farmers directly by mobile money. Each payment is linked to what it relates to, such as a delivery, a quality premium or a programme benefit, so farmers see why they were paid and organisations keep a record that supports first-mile traceability and audits. Direct payment also reduces the room for errors and deductions along the chain.
Who uses the farmer app?
- Food and agri companies building a direct relationship with the farmers in their supply base.
- NGOs, donors and banks reaching farmers for programmes, surveys and financial services.
- Governments and national programmes giving farmers access to their own records and to public services.
How does it connect to field work?
The farmer app and the field agent app share the same registry. Farmers can confirm what an agent recorded, correct their plot details or answer a survey without waiting for the next visit, which reduces the workload of field agent management and improves data quality.
Can we add features for our farmers?
Yes. Modules switch on as you need them. If your farmers need a specific feature, such as a new payment flow, a loyalty scheme or programme content, we prototype it with you in the Nursery.
Frequently asked questions
Does the farmer app work without internet or on basic phones?
The app is offline-first and designed for the entry-level smartphones common in rural areas. It stores data locally and syncs when a connection returns. For farmers without a smartphone, field agents can act on their behalf with their consent.
How does the app help farmers who cannot read?
Content can be listened to through voice and read-aloud, icons carry meaning, and the interface is available in local languages. Training, surveys and advice all work without reading.
How do farmers control their data?
Farmers see what data exists about them, which organisations can access it and for what purpose. They grant or withdraw consent in the app, and every choice is recorded with a date, which also gives organisations a clear legal basis.
Can we pay farmers through the app?
Yes. Payments can be made to farmers by mobile money, each linked to the delivery, premium or programme it relates to. Farmers see what they were paid and why, and you keep a traceable record.
Can the app carry our brand or programme?
The app can present your programme, your content and your messages to the farmers you work with, while farmers keep a single identity across the organisations they deal with.
