Pre-competitive collaboration
Pre-competitive collaboration is cooperation that competing companies choose to undertake on needs that confer no competitive advantage, such as fraud checks, agronomic knowledge, research access or common farmer records, while each company keeps its own data and commercial relationships private.
Also known as: pre-competitive network · shared infrastructure · industry collaboration
Why does it matter?
The same farmers often supply several buyers. Each buyer registering them, mapping their plots and checking fraud separately multiplies costs, burdens farmers and still misses what happens across buyers, such as the same plot declared twice. Some problems can only be solved together: side-selling and duplicate declarations are only visible across datasets.
What is typically pooled?
- cross-buyer deduplication and fraud signals;
- agronomic knowledge and advisory content;
- access to farmers for surveys and research, with fair compensation for farmers;
- common farmer records, when participants agree, with farmer consent.
What stays competitive?
Each buyer’s own farmer registry and plot polygons, prices, contracts, sourcing strategy, premium programmes, brand claims and commercial relationships. Each buyer keeps its data private and builds its own services on it, adding only what it chooses to pool.
Common pitfalls
- Sharing without governance, which creates legal and trust risks.
- Treating farmers as a data source rather than participants with rights.
- Shared layers controlled by a single buyer, which others will not join.
- Making pooling a condition of access, which turns collaboration into an obligation.
Farmer1st is private by default and pre-competitive by choice: everything a buyer brings stays in its own private space, and buyers who agree can pool what should not be paid for twice, on terms they set together. Fraud detection, the AI agronomist and farmer surveys are built on it.
Frequently asked questions
What stays private in a pre-competitive model?
Each company's own farmer and plot data, commercial terms, prices, volumes per buyer, supplier relationships and business strategy. What is pooled is only what the participants agree on: what everyone needs and no one gains from duplicating, under clear governance and competition-law safeguards.
Is pre-competitive collaboration compatible with competition law?
It can be, when it avoids exchanging commercially sensitive information and is structured with appropriate safeguards. Companies typically seek legal advice when designing such arrangements.
