Scope 3 and carbon MRV from first-mile farm data
Scope 3 figures and MRV dossiers built from verified plot and farm data, with farmers part of the value they help create.
Farmer1st's carbon module turns verified first-mile data, including plots, practices, inputs and trees, into Scope 3 emission estimates for agricultural supply chains and into measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) dossiers aligned with standards such as Verra and Gold Standard. The same farmer-level data supports returning part of the value to farmers.
Carbon
Scope 3 from the first mile
Estimate agricultural emissions and removals from plot-level data rather than generic averages alone.
MRV dossiers
Measurement, reporting and verification evidence organised for the standard you target, such as Verra or Gold Standard.
Built on verified plots
Validated polygons, land-use history and tree registers give each estimate a traceable basis.
Practices and inputs
Farming practices, fertiliser use and land management collected in the field feed the calculation.
Value back to farmers
Farmer-level records make it possible to share carbon value with the farmers whose work produces it.
How it works
- 01
Set the scope
Define the supply base, the commodities and the methodology or standard you follow.
- 02
Collect the activity data
Plots, practices, inputs and trees are collected or imported, then verified against the registry.
- 03
Calculate
Emissions and removals are calculated with the chosen methodology, plot by plot and aggregated.
- 04
Report and verify
Results feed your Scope 3 inventory or an MRV dossier ready for third-party verification.
What you get
- Scope 3 estimates grounded in field data
- MRV evidence that stands up to verification
- One dataset for compliance, carbon and impact
- A basis for sharing value with farmers
Why is carbon in agriculture so hard to measure?
For food and agri companies, most emissions sit in Scope 3, and much of that sits at farm level. Yet the data needed to measure it, such as land use, practices, inputs and trees, is rarely recorded for smallholder plots. Companies fall back on averages that cannot show the effect of their own programmes.
On the removals side, agroforestry and soil projects need a strong measurement, reporting and verification basis before anyone will trust the result.
How does Farmer1st build carbon figures from the first mile?
We start from the same verified data used for traceability and compliance:
- Plots with validated polygons and land-use history from the geo and polygons service.
- Practices and inputs collected by field teams or declared by farmers: fertiliser use, residue management, shade, land preparation.
- Trees registered and measured through trees and agroforestry.
- Volumes linked to plots through first-mile traceability, so emissions can be allocated to what you buy.
This activity data is verified against the registry, then run through the methodology you follow.
What is an MRV dossier and what does it contain?
MRV stands for measurement, reporting and verification. An MRV dossier is the evidence a verifier needs to confirm a claimed result. Depending on the standard, it typically includes:
| Element | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Project boundary | Which farmers and plots are included, with geolocation |
| Baseline | The situation before the intervention |
| Activity data | Practices, inputs, trees and measurements over time |
| Calculations | The methodology applied and its results |
| Monitoring records | Repeat visits, survival, changes on the ground |
| Farmer participation | Consent and involvement of each farmer |
We organise this evidence to align with the standard you target, such as Verra or Gold Standard. Verification and credit issuance remain the role of independent verifiers and standards bodies.
How does the Scope 3 side work?
For your inventory, plot-level estimates are aggregated by supplier, origin and commodity, and allocated to the volumes you source. You can see where emissions concentrate, which practices reduce them and how your supply base changes from one year to the next. Because the data is versioned and never overwritten, each reported figure can be traced back to its source records.
How do farmers take part in the value?
Carbon value is created on farms, by farmers. Because Farmer1st records data at farmer and plot level, with consent, it becomes possible to trace each farmer’s contribution and to share part of the value with them. We treat this as a principle: those whose work produces the result should take part in its value. It also strengthens a project, since farmers who benefit stay engaged over the long term.
Farmer1st is the first-mile infrastructure built around farmers: a farmer-controlled network where companies, governments and organisations collect, verify and share origin data, and build the services they need on top of it.
Can one dataset serve compliance, carbon and impact?
Yes, and it should. The polygons collected for EUDR compliance, the practices covered by training and quizzes and the trees in agroforestry programmes all feed the same calculation. Existing data from other systems comes in through data integration. Farmers are asked once, and each actor sees only what the farmer has agreed to share.
Can the carbon module follow our methodology?
Yes. Modules switch on as you need them. If your inventory or project needs a specific methodology, emission factor set or reporting format, we prototype it with you in the Nursery.
Frequently asked questions
How can first-mile data improve our Scope 3 reporting?
Agricultural emissions are often estimated from national or regional averages. Plot-level data on land use, practices, inputs and trees lets you replace part of those averages with figures specific to your supply base, and track change over time as practices improve.
Do you issue carbon credits?
No. Credits are issued by standards bodies after independent verification. Farmer1st organises the measurement, reporting and verification evidence so that a project can be assessed against the standard it targets, such as Verra or Gold Standard.
Which methodology do you use?
The one your inventory or project requires. We apply the methodology you follow, whether a recognised standard's methodology or your company's own Scope 3 approach, and record which one produced each result.
How do farmers benefit from carbon projects?
Because data is recorded at farmer and plot level, it becomes possible to trace the contribution of each farmer and to share part of the value created with them. The principle is simple: those whose work produces the result should take part in its value.
Can we reuse our EUDR data for carbon?
Yes. Validated polygons and land-use history collected for EUDR are the same foundation a carbon calculation needs. The data is collected once and reused, with farmers' consent.
