Cocoa traceability and EUDR compliance for smallholder supply chains
From many small plots to one verified record per farmer: cocoa traceability, EUDR due diligence and child labour monitoring.
Farmer1st gives cocoa buyers a first-mile data backbone: a verified registry of farmers and plots, audit-ready polygons, deforestation assessment up to today, child labour monitoring and TRACES-ready EUDR due diligence. It plugs into the tools you already use, and anything specific to your sourcing model is prototyped with you in the Nursery.
What makes this first mile hard
Many small, scattered plots
Cocoa is grown by smallholders on many small plots, often without formal titles. Every plot needs a verified location before a bean can be declared deforestation-free.
Layers of intermediaries
Beans move from farm gate to buying agents, cooperatives, warehouses and exporters. Each hand-off is a point where origin data can be lost or re-keyed.
Side-selling and mixing
Farmers sell to whoever pays on the day, and lots are mixed on the way to the port. Declared volumes must stay plausible for the plots they come from.
Child labour risk
Cocoa buyers are expected to identify, remediate and monitor child labour risk at household level, through a CLMRS or equivalent system.
Agroforestry and shade trees
Shade trees and cocoa agroforestry change how canopy looks from space. Deforestation assessment has to tell a productive agroforest apart from forest loss.
Modules for this supply chain
EUDR compliance
From plot polygons to a submitted DDS: EUDR due diligence built on verified first-mile data, sent directly to EU TRACES.
Explore the module →Geo & polygons
Polygons captured in the field, validated, and assessed for deforestation up to today. Your calculation method, not ours imposed.
Explore the module →Field agent management
Missions, routes, offline collection and supervision for the teams who gather first-mile data, with quality checked as it comes in.
Explore the module →Human rights due diligence
Child labour monitoring and remediation, an independent grievance channel and living income data, from the households themselves.
Explore the module →Trees & agroforestry
Every tree registered, measured and followed over time, so agroforestry programmes can show what was planted and what survived.
Explore the module →Fraud detection
Duplicate farmers, impossible volumes and side-selling, detected in your supply base and, if buyers choose, across buyers.
Explore the module →Traceability & certification
From plot to lot: first-mile chain of custody, mass balance and audit-ready certification records, with origin attested by farmers.
Explore the module →Cocoa is one of the supply chains where the gap between what regulation asks for and what the first mile records is widest. Farmer1st is the first-mile infrastructure built around farmers: a farmer-controlled network where companies, governments and organisations collect, verify and share origin data, and build the services they need on top of it. For cocoa, that means one verified record per farmer and per plot, reused by every programme that needs it.
What does the EUDR require from cocoa buyers?
Under Regulation (EU) 2023/1115, cocoa and derived products placed on the EU market must be deforestation-free, produced in line with the laws of the country of production, and covered by a due diligence statement. In practice this asks for:
- the geolocation of every plot the cocoa comes from, with a polygon where required;
- a risk assessment that links each lot to those plots;
- risk mitigation when the assessment is not negligible;
- a statement submitted to EU TRACES, the EUDR information system.
Our EUDR guide explains the obligations in detail, with official sources.
How do you map thousands of small cocoa plots?
Field agents collect plots offline-first, directly on the farm, with AI added to support them and the teams who review the data. Existing polygons from earlier campaigns or other providers are imported and checked instead of being redrawn. Every polygon is validated for geometry and plausibility before it enters the registry, then assessed for deforestation up to today.
Field agent management keeps the campaigns under control: who visits which farmers, which plots are still missing, which records failed quality checks.
How do you keep beans linked to plots through intermediaries?
Cocoa changes hands several times before export. Farmer1st records purchases at the first point of sale and carries the link to verified plots through cooperatives and warehouses, so the first-mile traceability survives aggregation. Fraud detection compares declared volumes with plot size and expected yield, and, when buyers choose to pool it, flags suspicious patterns across buyers without exposing one buyer’s data to another.
How does child labour monitoring fit in?
Child labour risk is assessed at household level. Our human rights due diligence service supports a CLMRS: household surveys, identification, remediation follow-up and grievance channels, all attached to the same farmer record. The data that serves EUDR also serves your human rights reporting and your CSDDD obligations.
What about shade trees and agroforestry?
Many cocoa farmers grow under shade trees or in agroforestry systems. Trees & agroforestry records trees per plot and follows planting programmes over time. Those records support deforestation assessment, carbon projects and living income strategies built on diversified farms.
What if our cocoa programme needs something specific?
Every sourcing model is a little different: a certification scheme, a premium distribution, a specific audit trail. We assemble the existing modules and build the missing piece with you in the Nursery. You use it, we adjust, and it runs on the same network as everything else.
Frequently asked questions
Is cocoa covered by the EUDR?
Yes. Cocoa is one of the relevant commodities under Regulation (EU) 2023/1115, together with derived products such as cocoa paste, butter, powder and chocolate. Operators must show that the cocoa is deforestation-free, legally produced and covered by a due diligence statement. See our EUDR guide.
How do you prove a cocoa plot is deforestation-free?
Each plot gets audit-ready geolocation, checked for quality, then assessed with a multi-source deforestation analysis up to today. You can apply our method, a public reference method, or a model that follows your own risk policy.
Can you handle cocoa agroforestry without flagging it as deforestation?
Yes. Tree inventories and agroforestry records sit next to the plot polygon, so the assessment can take shade systems into account and flag only what needs a human review.
Does Farmer1st replace our existing cocoa sustainability tools?
No. It connects to the field tools, ERPs and compliance platforms you already use, and adds the first-mile data layer underneath them.
