First-mile traceability for other smallholder supply chains
Tea, sugarcane, rice, fruits, nuts, shea: one first-mile backbone, adapted to your supply chain in the Nursery.
Farmer1st's first-mile backbone is not tied to one crop. The same verified farmer and plot registry, geolocation, traceability, surveys and training adapt to other smallholder supply chains such as tea, sugarcane, rice, fruits, nuts and shea. Whatever your supply chain needs specifically, we prototype it with you in the Nursery.
What makes this first mile hard
Every crop has its own first mile
Plucking cycles for tea, harvest cutting for sugarcane, seasonal collection for shea: each crop has its own rhythm, actors and hand-offs.
Growing buyer expectations
Even outside the EUDR, buyers face due diligence expectations on human rights and environment, and customers ask for credible origin data.
Smallholders outside formal systems
Many growers are not registered anywhere, which makes premiums, inputs, training and traceability hard to deliver to the right person.
Programmes that collect the same data again
Certification, sustainability and development programmes often survey the same farmers for the same facts, one after the other.
Modules for this supply chain
Traceability & certification
From plot to lot: first-mile chain of custody, mass balance and audit-ready certification records, with origin attested by farmers.
Explore the module →Field agent management
Missions, routes, offline collection and supervision for the teams who gather first-mile data, with quality checked as it comes in.
Explore the module →Geo & polygons
Polygons captured in the field, validated, and assessed for deforestation up to today. Your calculation method, not ours imposed.
Explore the module →Farmer surveys
Ask the farmers you need to hear from, by country, region, gender, age or crop. Consented, verified answers, fairly compensated.
Explore the module →Training & quizzes
Train the right farmers, test what stuck, train again where it didn't, and measure the impact on the indicators you report.
Explore the module →Data integration
Any tool, any spreadsheet, one verified record: AI-assisted mapping checked by a person, with every version kept.
Explore the module →Farmer1st is the first-mile infrastructure built around farmers: a farmer-controlled network where companies, governments and organisations collect, verify and share origin data, and build the services they need on top of it. The backbone is the same whatever the crop. What changes from one supply chain to another is the rhythm of the harvest, the actors at the first sale and the evidence buyers need.
Which supply chains does this cover?
Beyond cocoa, coffee, rubber, palm oil, cashew, spices and cotton, the same backbone adapts to other smallholder supply chains, for example:
- tea, with frequent leaf plucking and collection centres;
- sugarcane, with harvest scheduling and deliveries to the mill;
- rice, with seasonal cycles, inputs and water management;
- fruits, with packhouses, grading and food safety requirements;
- nuts, with collection through village traders;
- shea, often collected by women’s groups from wild or parkland trees.
What stays the same across supply chains?
The core of first-mile traceability does not depend on the crop:
- a verified, consented registry of farmers and plots;
- audit-ready geolocation and plot-level risk signals from Geo & polygons;
- purchases linked to origin, with an auditable chain of custody through traceability & certification;
- field agent management for campaigns and data quality;
- farmer surveys and training & quizzes to reach smallholders directly;
- data integration with the field tools, ERPs and compliance platforms you already use.
What changes for each crop?
Each supply chain has its own steps: leaf collection and weighing for tea, cane deliveries for sugar, packhouse grading for fruit, group collection for shea. These steps are configured on top of the shared modules, or built when they do not exist. The farmer record stays the same, so a farmer who grows several crops is registered once and asked once.
Do these supply chains face due diligence requirements?
These crops are not covered by the EUDR, whose full list of covered commodities is in our EUDR guide. Their buyers may still face due diligence expectations on human rights and environment through the CSDDD, rules against products made with forced labour, certification standards and customer requirements. The same data that proves origin also documents how risks were identified and addressed.
How do we start with a supply chain that isn’t listed?
Describe your supply chain and your obligations. In the Nursery, we map the gap between what you need and what the existing modules do, assemble them, and build the missing piece with you. You use it early, we adjust it until it fits your real process, and it then runs on the same pre-competitive network as every other supply chain.
Frequently asked questions
Which other supply chains can Farmer1st support?
Smallholder supply chains such as tea, sugarcane, rice, fruits, nuts and shea. The same modules for the farmer and plot registry, geolocation, traceability, surveys and training apply; the crop-specific steps are configured or built with you in the Nursery.
How fast can a new supply chain be set up?
We start from the existing modules and build only what is missing. You use a first version early, and we adjust it with you until it fits your real process.
Do these crops need EUDR due diligence?
Not under Regulation (EU) 2023/1115, whose full list of covered commodities is in our EUDR guide. Buyers can still face due diligence expectations from the CSDDD, forced-labour rules and customer requirements.
Can we use the network for several crops at once?
Yes. A farmer who grows several crops has one record in your registry, so your programmes across crops reuse the same verified data instead of collecting it again.
