Grievance mechanism
A grievance mechanism is a routinised, non-judicial process through which people affected by business activities, such as farmers, workers or communities, can raise complaints about adverse impacts and seek remedy. The UN Guiding Principles set effectiveness criteria for such mechanisms.
Also known as: complaints mechanism · operational-level grievance mechanism · whistleblowing channel
Why does it matter?
Grievance mechanisms are the third pillar of the UN Guiding Principles: access to remedy. In supply chains with many smallholders, they are often the only way for an affected farmer or worker to reach a company several tiers away. They also serve as early warning for human rights due diligence.
How does it work at the first mile?
- Channels people actually use: phone lines, messaging, community focal points or an app, in local languages, usable with low literacy.
- Protection: anonymity options and protection from retaliation.
- Case handling: acknowledgement, investigation, response and remedy within stated timelines.
- Feedback: complainants are told what happened.
- Learning: patterns in complaints inform risk assessment.
Common pitfalls
- A hotline nobody knows about, or only in the buyer’s language.
- Channels routed through the same intermediaries complaints may concern.
- Counting complaints as a failure metric, which discourages reporting.
- No link to remediation budgets or decision-makers.
Farmer1st’s farmer app and human rights services give farmers a direct, consented channel to raise and follow concerns.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a grievance mechanism effective?
UN Guiding Principle 31 lists criteria: legitimate, accessible, predictable, equitable, transparent, rights-compatible, a source of continuous learning and, for operational-level mechanisms, based on engagement and dialogue.
Is a grievance mechanism legally required?
The CSDDD requires in-scope companies to provide a notification and complaints procedure. Many certification standards and buyer codes of conduct also require one.
